Hajwair Ahmad –
This is a review of the Melobuds Pro after one or two months of continuous use.
Strengths:.
1. ANC: This is the clear differentiator. The adaptive ANC makes a noticeable difference. It muffles many noises and eliminates some completely. However, it still does not manage to conceal some sharp pitches, such as a child screaming or the sounds of birds and chickens. All of the above applies to ANC alone; if you play audio, you will hardly notice your surroundings. It is very good at eliminating mechanical noises, such as those from a UPS or generator. However, noises like those coming from steam engines are not suppressed as effectively.
2. QCY App: You can configure your settings through the QCY app. There’s even a sleep mode that allows you to lock your touch controls, so you can sleep with the earphones in without worrying about accidental presses changing your settings. You can also adjust the ANC settings, check the battery levels, and turn LDAC on or off. In my experimentation, turning off LDAC did not noticeably change the audio quality; however, it significantly enhanced the earphones’ battery life, which was a plus.
3. Sound Quality: My assessment of sound quality is far from being professional. However, I found the quality to be to my liking, compared to the Ronin 520 I used previously. The sound is clearer and more comprehensive, perhaps because the ANC helps to isolate outside noise. The QCY app also offers many sound settings that I haven’t explored because I haven’t felt the need to do so. You can change sound effects and manage custom audio presets.
4. Excellent Customer Service: I interacted with their store before purchasing, and they were very helpful and supportive with my queries, doing their best to facilitate my order. I don’t know whether they have service centers for after-sales service, which, if available, would be another solid plus.
5. Design: It is not anything extravagant or flashy, and it follows a more conventional earbud design that fits comfortably in the ear. They can take light movements without the risk of falling out; however, I haven’t used them in exercise scenarios. The charging case, on the other hand, is beautiful and compact, signaling that it is built to last.
6. Dual connection: apparently, the earbuds can be simultaneously paired with two devices. I have not tried this feature, but.
Weaknesses:.
1. Battery Indication: There is no clear battery level indication on the case. A white light that stays on for a while indicates an ample battery. But when the white light is short or absent, the charging case has very little battery remaining. There are no numbers on the case showing precise battery levels. However, this is not a significant drawback, as you can rely on estimates and the white light pattern.
2. Battery Life: This is not a major disadvantage, as the battery life is quite satisfactory. However, it doesn’t compare to the best features, such as those mentioned in the strengths section. And you do feel the lack of it when you are used to ANC, and then the battery runs out. Individual earphones provide about 5 hours of battery life with ANC and LDAC enabled. With LDAC off, the battery life extends by an hour or two. I haven’t tested it with the ANC off. As for the case, I comfortably used it to charge the buds twice a day, and the battery didn’t run out. The case charges buds two to three times and then runs out of battery. It roughly takes an hour to charge back up. For the individual earphones, I estimate the charging time to be about 40 to 50 minutes to reach 100%.
3. Qcy app limitations: It requires mobile location to be enabled in order to change settings or interact with the earbuds (some settings can be directly changed by interacting with the earbuds, such as ANC on/off). Some of the settings cannot be saved, like the sleep mode, as they reset to default as soon as you put your buds in the case. Other settings, like those for ANC and LDAC, are saved.
Conclusion:
While pricier than local competitors like Zero and Ronin, the Melobuds Pro fare much better in terms of features, especially regarding their ANC. Based on my brief use, if these buds maintain this performance, they will absolutely be worth their price. I will update my review if I have any significant findings later.
